19.May.2019 Cape Lookout

willets and a dunlin patrolling the beach

Only 6 nautical miles from Beaufort, Cape Lookout offers miles of undeveloped beach. It is the southernmost point of North Carolina's barrier islands. We decided to go and see it - we needed a distraction from yesterday's headaches. It was a short sail along the coast of the Shackleford Banks to get into the bight behind this cape - a beautiful and well protected anchorage.

We got off the boat to walk the beach...

I had read that there were wild horses on these barrier islands. Unfortunately we did not see any, but we did see loons! They remind me of home.

There are too many shrimp in these waters, despite the number of shrimp boats out here. This anchorage beats out the St. Johns River in Florida for noisiest come nightfall. It's incredible how much noise those shrimp make!

more shrimpers needed, so we can sleep!

This was a much better day than yesterday.
