20th - 23rd.May.2019 Oriental, NC

approaching Oriental, NC

I took NO photos while we were in Oriental?! I wished that I had taken photos of the silly looking dragons around the town - some fire hydrants, some lawn ornaments, some paintings inside shops. I noticed them, but I wasn't getting it. I finally asked one local: "What's up with all the dragons in this town?" Her response: "Oriental." Dah!

We stayed here 4 nights. Two of those were at the free town dock (48hr. max. stay). It was great being attached to land. We needed to be, truthfully, because of the issue we had with the faulty Y-valve and inability to pump out. Fortunately for us there was one in stock here, so the 48hr. stay met our needs. As a bonus, the town dock had a pump out! So that issue was dealt with in a timely fashion. The issue with the solar charger was simply a burnt out fuse, so that was a quickie to deal with too. Less timely, however, and the reason we stayed here the 4 nights, was the issue with the slipping outboard prop. We ordered a replacement and we had to wait for it.

Oriental is a sleepy little town that's full of boats. It claims to be the "sailing capital of North Carolina" and it must be given its' location on the Neuse River, from which Pamlico Sound and the outer barrier islands are accessible.

While waiting here, I finally found the energy and the time to blog :)  and Gil began reading 'The Pillars of the Earth' by Ken Follett. We met several other cruisers while at the dock, and enjoyed the social time … we've been spending too much time aboard with just each other. It would be fun to find another buddy boat going north at our lolly gagging pace. We've met other northbound cruisers but most seem to be on a mission or a tight schedule. We know we won't be coming back this way, so we want to spend some time savouring the journey.
