We were looking forward to picking up a few items for our
boat while in Deltaville, a small town of 800, which is all about boats. In
fact, boats outnumber people here by nearly 4 to 1. Imagine our disappointment when we realized
it was Sunday!
So, we thought that we might just as well get on our way
south. The NOAA weather forecast was calling for 15-20 knot north winds, with
gusts to 30; but our Windfinder App was telling a different story: 8-10 knot
north winds. Skies were sunny. We pulled up anchor. The channel into and out of
Jackson’s Creek takes a wide ‘S’ bend. I was at the helm (because Gil always
weighs anchor), and misread the channel markers, which led us …. aground!
Captain Gil wasn’t too pleased with his crew. Taking advantage of a passing
motor-boater’s wake, however, Gil was able to reverse us off. He kept the helm
after that!
Once out of the channel and back into The Bay, we found the
winds strong and the waves big, and the ‘ride’ uncomfortable. It didn’t take us
long to make a U-turn. Just over an hour later, we were right back where we
started – at anchor in Jackson’s Creek.
Jackson Creek anchorage
There happened to be a racing regatta on The Bay at the mouth of Jackson’s Creek. We had ring side seats during our brief outing.
Back at anchor, and perhaps inspired by our neighbour (up above), Gil decided to tackle a boat job – replacing bearings in our windmill. Hopefully, we’ll find it runs a little quieter and more efficiently.
must be quite the view from up there!
Serenada's Workshop
Tomorrow, we shall attempt once again to get on our way
south.
