It was a week ago that we visited Washington with my sister
Margaret. As you may recall from an earlier blog, we sailed to Washington, DC
and chose to stay at anchor in front of the Capital Yacht Club.
From there, we could walk to the many places of interest
that Washington has to offer. Unfortunately, most were closed due to the
government shutdown. This was made up for, however, by President Obama’s
personal apology (see Washington DC blog spot) for the inconvenience of these
closures.
He was not the only ‘big wig’ that we brushed shoulders
with! Oh no. We met two others!
Where? How? Why at the bar at the Capital Yacht Club J
We shared several laughs over a drink with James. He regaled
us with stories of his mishaps while out sailing with his son and his friends.
James’ brother, who was to captain the boat, had to cancel at the 11th
hour; but assured James he had the requisite knowledge and skills needed to
take the kids out. He had us in stitches. Turns out, he was a past mayor and
congressman in the House of Representatives, for Georgia; and is now president
of the US Institute for Peace. He has a beautiful and big (48’) older boat – a
double ender with teak decking ….built in Taiwan …but I can’t remember what
make it was L
We also chatted with Scott – though he did most of the
chatting (and drinking). Scott was VP of the Seven Seas Cruising Association
(SSCA). He explained that there are no “live- aboards,” only fulltime cruisers,
of which he was one. He had much else to say too, but I can’t remember it ….
Anyway, if “hobnobbing” is on your bucket list, you must go
to Washington!
Saw your location and amazed at your distance travelled today!
