The salty sea

When our kids were young, we once took them out east with our camper trailer, and visited Grand Mannan Island in the Bay of Fundy. While there, we filled a litre bottle with sea water, and challenged them to guess at how much salt was in there. What would you guess? We took our guesstimates ... 1 tsp., 1 tbsp., 2 tsp.,  11/2 tbsp., and Curt who was very young at the time guesstimated 3+ tbsp. As parents, we wondered how he'd take the disappointment of being the biggest loser. I know you're thinking we were crazy parents just doing this, but we boiled away the water, and measured the salt that was left behind. 4+ tablespoons! Curtis won the prize and we were astounded.

You might think this is a storm we’re going through, but it’s not. These pictures, taken at anchor, show salt deposits that have absorbed moisture overnight. The salt is everywhere on the boat. When Gil starts the dinghy motor,  grains of salt are all over his hands. So, Gil did the math … Serenada displaces 11,000 lb or 5,000 litres of water, and at 3.5% salinity, that works out to about 375lb. of salt displaced by our little boat alone. There  is an incredible amount of salt in sea water!

Today was a lazy indoor day, as it’s cool, windy and choppy out there.

It was going to be laundry day, but I figured we’d get soaked coming back to the boat in our “junker” dinghy ….. you know, it doesn’t have a name yet … “junker”  …hmmm … wouldn’t attract pirate thieves with a name like that, would it?  Anyway, maybe tomorrow will be laundry day.  Manyana.

I got out one of Nadrine’s garage sale treasure finds – a battery operated  SINGER Handy Stitch – and restitched the zipper back into one of my pillow slips.  It worked!  Thanks Nadrine J

Watched a movie (matinee) – City of Gods – from the video library given to us by Amie & Dan. It’s based on the true story of a photographer  who came from the slums of Rio, and made his fortune by shooting photos of the gang violence there. Very funny opening scene, despite the movie’s subject matter.

Sat in the cockpit for morning coffee, afternoon tea, and happy hour appi’s: same place, different views - you always know when the tide changes!

 outgoing tide

tide's changing - we're all sideways to each other

incoming tide - that's a Coast Guard Station behind us

That's it for today. Go do something fun :-)
