8th - 9th.May.2019 Crabbing

Our stay at Beaufort, SC. was much longer than anticipated, but we left with a functioning family car(the dinghy) and a working anchor light; and fully loaded with fuel, water, and provisions.

the dream

Gil was looking forward to trying out the crab pot we bought in Beaufort's Walmart and feasting on its' harvest. We made way on the 'inside' (on the ICW) stopping for the night on the South Edisto River. There were several sets of crab pots around the anchorage, a very encouraging sign! After scoping out the depths in the area, we dropped the crab pot in 15' of water, and then found a place to anchor.

While enjoying our arrival beers, we watched the big red floater ball that we attached to the crab pot (to mark its' location) gradually becoming more and more submerged with the incoming tide. Oops. There's a learning curve for everything. It needed to be retrieved while we could still find it, and repositioned in shallower water. Captain Gil favoured doing that with the big boat. Mate Diana favoured doing that with the dinghy. The tide comes in fast while you make decisions. By the time we pulled up anchor, the floater ball was underwater. We did, however, manage to locate it and save our crab pot. We had thought we may have lost it on our first attempt to use it.

After scoping out the area a second time, we again dropped the crab pot in shallower water, and reanchored. The big red floater ball remained visible for the rest of the evening. We were hopeful that crab would be on tomorrow's menu.

Morning came and as we looked out, we could see the crab pots marked by the green floats, and the crab pots marked by the white floats, but where was ours? We couldn't see our big red floater ball anywhere. Had the current taken it? Had a dolphin tried to get at the bait and taken it deeper? Somehow it had disappeared :(   The first time we tried using a crab pot, we lost it!
